For Judge Betty Adams Green, being selected as honorary chairman for this year's Relay For Life of East Nashville is a natural fit.
For the past 11 years she has served as Davidson County's chief Juvenile Court judge and spends her days hearing cases ranging from neighborhood spats, truancy and disorderly conduct to murder.
But while Green is regarded as an advocate for Nashville youth, she's just as passionate about cancer research. She cared for her husband, who lost his battle with cancer several years ago only months after receiving his diagnosis.
"This is an opportunity to make a positive difference in someone's life," she said of being selected as honorary chairman. "I can't do anything about the fact my husband died of cancer. But research for a cure is what will make it safe for my children and grandchildren, not feeling sorry for myself, but actively promoting a cause."
