New Vandy center caters to cancer survivors’ needs

For cancer patients, life doesn’t end at diagnosis, and challenges don’t stop after treatment.

In the past decade medical practitioners have begun to look more closely at the needs of the growing number of people living after cancer treatment.

The nearly 12 million Americans who have survived cancer are at risk for recurrent or secondary cancers, but can also suffer from other physical, emotional and practical issues.

To reach what it sees as an underserved market, Vanderbilt University Medical Center is opening a new center that offers comprehensive cancer survivor treatment. Debra Friedman, director of the soon-to-open survivorship center, says Vanderbilt has a good track record for treating and curing cancer, but hospital officials saw a need to do more.
