20th annual Love Lights a Tree fundraiser honors cancer survivors

Roger Dale Cato stood in the breezy night air Sunday with his mother, Wilma, and watched as Dr. Jim Hampton's wife, Barbara, flipped a switch and illuminated the lights of the small evergreen in front of Gateway Medical Center.

Cato, 28, was one of several cancer survivors who attended the 20th annual Love Lights a Tree fundraiser that honors cancer survivors and those who have succumbed to the disease.

Cato has been battling melanoma cancer since 2002 and has undergone several procedures, including the removal of his left eye.

The ceremony touched his heart.
