Description:

Susan G. Komen for the Cure-Greater Nashville has shared the following descriptions of their 2008 Grantees:

In 2008, the Komen Greater Nashville Affiliate granted more than $400,000 to local programs that provide early detection and treatment of breast cancer and breast health education and outreach.

  • Siloam: The Siloam Family Health Center with the support of the Susan G. Komen Foundation, Greater Nashville Affiliate, will provide breast cancer screening and education for refugee, immigrant and uninsured women in Nashville, TN. Many women in this target population face multiple barriers to accessing quality healthcare and prevention information.
  • Minnie Pearl: The Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation Rural Transportation Outreach project is designed to provide a more comprehensive level of transportation assistance for breast cancer patients living in outlying Davidson County and contiguous counties. The initiative will a) increase awareness of available services among rural breast cancer patients in need, b) give direct assistance to allow clients to access necessary radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and c) help stabilize their diagnosis and reduce breast cancer fears through other available support services.
  • Cool Springs YMCA: Combination mind body practices have gained substantial support from the medical community in improving the quality of life for those living with and surviving breast cancers. In 2000 a cutting edge program was developed by the Cool Springs YMCA to address the needs of breast cancer patients and survivors in Middle Tennessee.
  • Latino Outreach: The Latino Breast Health Outreach program is an education/screening project providing comprehensive breast health information as well as screening and diagnostic mammograms/breast ultrasounds to women in medically underserved communities throughout Nashville. The primary access point for participants is the Saint Thomas Hospital Family Health Center South, a clinic geographically located in the largest Latino community in Davidson County.
  • Mammograms in May: Provides free screening mammograms and, for the uninsured, necessary follow up care for women over the age of 40 years as part of Nashville General Hospital’s (NGH) fifth annual Mammograms in May (MIM) program.
  • Vanderbilt Breast Health Initiative: The Student Community Health Coalition (SCHC) Breast Health Initiative provides breast health and breast cancer education and support in thirteen Tennessee counties. The program empowers women to understand risks and early detection options, reducing fears and reliance on cancer myths. It connects underserved women to screening options and provides free clinical breast exams and breast health education on evenings and weekends to broaden options for working women
  • Project Pink Plus: Creates awareness of the importance of breast exams and screening and to encourage working women to make time for their own exams. To ensure the project's success, SRHS will employ a dedicated individual to serve as a principle facilitator. The facilitator will gather educational materials and schedule informational visits to selected employers and schools during convenient hours in order to reach as many working women as possible without interfering with job duties.
  • Best Project: The proposed program called the BeST (Breast Screening and Treatment,) for Tennessee Women Project is regional in focus and available only to women who do not have insurance and are below the established poverty level.
  • Witness Project: This volunteer organization of breast and cervical cancer survivors witness to African American women about the importance of regular screenings to reduce mortality from these cancers.
  • Gilda’s Club: Our goal for this project as we move into a new, larger facility, is to expand our outreach to those with breast cancer, their families and friends, to offer emotional support, social support, plus lectures and workshops for educational purposes to those in Davidson and twelve surrounding counties. We will expand our outreach to those in surrounding counties who are coming in for treatment at local cancer centers and will provide greater learning opportunities for women to better help them understand the risks of breast cancer, what their options are for treatment and, certainly, help them to control their fears by learning from the collective wisdom of others that have shared the same experience
