Camp Bluebird is a 3-day, 2-night camp retreat where adult cancer
patients are provided with education, support and encouragement in
living a life after a cancer diagnosis. The first Camp Bluebird was
organized in 1985 by a cancer survivor at Saint Vincent’s Hospital in
Birmingham, Alabama. Today, Camp Bluebird is held in many locations
throughout the country. Middle Tennessee’s Camp Bluebird began in 1987
as a project of Saint Thomas Hospital and the Telephone Pioneers of
America (now AT&T) and is one of the longest running camps of its
kind. Middle Tennessee Camp Bluebird is held each spring and fall.
What does Camp Bluebird offer:
- Time for listening, learning, sharing, and caring
- Exploration of lifestyle adjustments in living with or beyond cancer
- An opportunity to assess non-medical needs and discover ways to meet those needs
- Education
regarding medically related concerns such as nutrition, exercise, side
effect from cancer treatment and management of those symptoms - A variety of recreational activities like crafts, games, cabin skits, yoga, dancing.
Who can attend:
Adults aged 18 or older who have been diagnosed with cancer are invited to apply to attend.
Volunteers include registered nurses, social workers, chaplains, nutritionists and others, many of whom are cancer survivors
Camp is scheduled for September 19 – 21, 2008 at Hillmont Christian Camp in White Bluff, Tenn.
The registration fee is $25.00 and that covers the entire camp.
