City golf player overcomes cancer

No matter what score he eventually would shoot, Steve McFarland already had won when he stepped to the first tee at Leslie Park Golf Course on Friday morning in the first round of the Ann Arbor City Men's Golf Tournament.

Ten months ago, McFarland was diagnosed with testicular cancer, which spread to his abdomen, including into his throat and behind his lungs.

Doctors gave him 60 to 100 days to live, but McFarland is still swinging.

The Nashville, Tenn., resident completed chemotherapy and underwent surgery April 3, when doctors removed 13 racquetball-sized tumors from his body.
